In the spring term students in freshman environmental science have the opportunity to study one environmental issue in depth and share, through class presentations, their new knowledge with their peers. The topics include issues in the areas of food, waste, water, and energy. This project brings together many of the skills and concepts they have learned throughout the year and allows students to get a personal sense of connection to the systems that support us and a knowledge of how to reduce our impact on our environment. Students all enjoyed their fields trips to the University of New Hampshire Organic Dairy Farm and Hickory Nut Farm; Pine Tree Power and Tin Mountain Conservation Center; a wastewater and drinking water treatment facility; and Eco-Maine’s recycling, waste-to-energy, and landfill/ashfill facilities.
