National Honor Society Inductees
Brewster Academy recently inducted eight new students into the John Brewster Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS).
The evening’s speaker, science department chair Tom Owen, spoke to families, faculty, and students about his interest and doctoral work into why long-term effort and hard work often translate into higher achievement, higher GPAs, and more success for students (and workers) and how this related to the NHS inductees before him.
The continuous passion and perseverance of long-term goals is about grit, he said. “The grittier individual works strenuously over challenges, maintains long-term effort despite adversity, failure, and plateaus toward progress.
“The gritty individual stays the course, which is why you are standing here tonight. … I’m honored that you have allowed me to stand here and welcome you into this renowned society. I’m proud of you all. And I cannot wait to see how you will change the world. … What’s next? Stay the course and we will find out.”
Senior inductees are Sumayya Al-Kindy (Muscat, Oman), Helen D’Angelo (Wolfeboro), and Margarita Shostak (Kursk, Russia). Junior inductees are Dawson Allwine (Wolfeboro), Kaya Beland (Gilford), Maya Gomi (San Francisco), Secretary Maura McDonald (Beverly, Massachusetts), and Katie Slock (Alton).
These students join members President Bridget McDonald (Beverly, Mass.), Vice President Kyla Gardiola (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia), Treasurer Allison Caravella (Wolfeboro), Michael Chiasson (Pelham, New Hampshire), Mackenzie Donovan (Londonderry, New Hampshire), Angela First (Houston), Lucy Liautaud (Champaign, Ill.), Julia Sledzik (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.), Madison Vine (Ogdensburg, New York), and Hanyue Zheng (Beijing).
Election to the John Brewster Chapter of the National Honor Society reflects a distinguished academic record and exceptional contributions of service and leadership. Students who meet eligibility criteria are considered for election by a faculty council in the fall of each academic year and are inducted into the NHS in the winter trimester. Only junior and seniors are eligible for consideration.
